MHS Wood-Working Projects Recognized Nationally

(Mustang, Oklahoma – July 23, 2019) – It was less than two months ago that three Mustang High School Seniors found out via text message that their woodworking projects had been accepted into the North American Woodworking Contest which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 17-20, 2019, and now two of the three are coming home with award-winning projects.

The 2019 Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers (AWFS) Fair featured North America's largest gathering of woodworking equipment and technology, as well as the largest selection of hardware, tooling, components, power tools, manufacturing software, lumber, panel and construction material as well as an endless array of supplies for furniture, cabinet, millwork manufacturers and custom woodworking shops of all sizes.

This four day event also featured student competitions.  “Only 20 total High School Projects from Canada and the USA were selected from over 250 entrees,” said woodworking teacher Mike McGarry.  Of the 20, Mustang earned 3: Vavek Patel for his vase, Kailen Weidner for his split dresser, and Zach Holt for his desk. This is Vavek’s second time as a finalist, according to McGarry. The student works were on display during the show, and winners, as well as Best In Show, were announced at a banquet on July 19, 2019.  At that banquet, Kailen Weidner was awarded 1st Place for his dresser, while Zack Holt won 2nd place for his desk. Mustang Public Schools’ Director of Communications, Kirk Wilson, said that “this is an impressive feat for three of our students to be recognized in the top 20 of North America’s best projects, and we are so proud of them.  Mustang, and Oklahoma in general, was definitely represented well in Las Vegas.”
